WATCHED “BROWN SUGAR” AND IT TRANSFORMED MY APPROACH AS DIRECTOR.
I had a certain way of approaching this project as Director. I had perceived shots, transition, edits and particularly the Interview. I prepared the interview questions in hopes of getting my Artists/Professionals to speak openly and candidly. However, my questions were stiff and wordy.
To renew my mind I was reminded of one of my favourite movies. “Brown Sugar” is a simple story of Love and Hip Hop. The character Sydney plays an editor for XXL, a notorious Hip Hop Magazine known for its Rap Reviews and Rapper Interviews, telling her story of when she fell in love with Hip Hop. Sydney is characterized as having interviewed everyone in the Hip Hop game but through this film we see her story.
Watching Brown Sugar made me change my interview questions completely. It needed to change, I need to tell their stories. It also inspired music, edits and shots. Phase 1 concludes after my first meeting with my Artists/Professionals and Videographer which is tomorrow. So excited to meet with them and dive into this!
I shoot my first Artist Professional this weekend ! She’s groovy, funky and she’s definitely got soul.
